Tom Beames

Tom Beames: LRCA Historical Moment

Did you know? Tom Beames, a teacher born in 1920 and who died in 2005, was involved in the formation of the not-for-profit agency which became the LRCA in 1992.

Tom, along with several others, took money from their own pocket to help secure a place and supplies for the new organization. He took the lead in ensuring the proper paperwork was done to have the association become a registered charity.

Tom took on the role of a LRCA board member right from the start. He continued for the next 13 years, taking positions as president, vice-president and secretary.

Tom was born in Vancouver, but grew up in B.C.'s Interior - Peace River, Revelstoke and Penticton among other towns.
A master of the English language, Tom taught English in high schools in Wells and Williams Lake before moving to Lake Cowichan to become a special counsellor and then director of special education in Nanaimo School District.

Later, he was a psychologist in private practice in Ladysmith.
