Remembering Jack Hepburn, LRCA Bingo Candyman
LRCA HISTORIC MOMENT: Jack S. Hepburn first arrived at the LRCA in 1994, looking for help with a poster for the Cancer Society, an organization with which he was already involved.
During the visit Jack was introduced to a visiting board member who convinced him to join the LRCA and become a member of the board of directors. During his many years as a board member, Jack also served a term as president.
When asked why he decided to volunteer and later become a board member with the LRCA, Jack said he “was rewarded by helping others and meeting so many people who have since become good friends,” and at the same time he was part of all the good things happening in the community.
Jack and his wife Ramona always answered the call when help was needed for fundraising activities or special events, assisting with Christmas Cheer, Trim a Tree for Charity, Bingo and open house.
The bingo concession was Jack’s favourite and he would be found there every week. The concession, often referred to as “Jack’s Corner” was also a PR tool.
It was a habit of his for many years to give out a Werthers to all and sundry when hey came to buy something from the concession. This helped him to become known as the candyman.
Jack and his family were involved in the motel business for many years. At various times he wore many hats: president of the provincial motel association, convention chairman and as a member of the Toastmasters.
Music was one of his passions and he could play seven different instruments.
Jack was born in 1924 and died in 2007.
Towards the end of his life, Jack lost his sight and lost his life to the cancer he had fought so long to control. The LRCA appreciates his amazing support.
